Former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir has rebounded from a knockout loss to Shane Carwin — which went down at UFC 111 last year — by taking out Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and Roy Nelson consecutively and in dominant fashion.
As a result, Mir believes he is drawing closer to title contention, though he recently told FightOpinion.com that he thinks it necessary to get at least one more win before he should rightfully be considered as a contender. As far as who he’s eyeing for that bout, Mir recently told FightOpinion.com that he wouldn’t mind avenging that KO loss to Shane Carwin.

“I think it keeps me right there in the talk about moving up,” Mir said of his recent win over Nelson. “Strategically, though, I’m still one fight away if I want to be in a title fight. Obviously, dos Santos is fighting next for the title versus Velasquez and so, you know, hopefully I’ll be looking for one more fight before that. Maybe right now would be a good idea to try to fight (Shane) Carwin, you know, I’m coming off two wins in a row and he’s coming off two losses, I guess there’s a good argument for having a rematch where even though he won the first bout I’m the way up and he’s having a bit of a speed bump.”

You might notice that Mir made no mention of a rubber match with his old nemesis Brock Lesnar. The two have split the outcomes of two different bouts, with Mir coming out on top in their first meeting by scoring a kneebar submission and Lesnar dominating their second bout by pounding Mir through the canvas in two rounds. Though Mir has stated int he past that he would very much like to face Lesnar for a third time, the former professional wrestler is currently on the sidelines battling diverticulitis for the second time in his career.

Despite the animosity that the two men have shared for one another, Mir explained that he has nothing but sympathy for Lesnar currently and only hopes that, as a fellow husband and father, the hulking former champ can recover and get back to action.

“Oh, I definitely do (feel sympathy for Brock). I mean, right now, what he’s going through is not having to do with us as competitors competing in the Octagon, you know, he’s a father, a husband, and he’s having health issues,” said Mir. “I don’t wish that on anybody. I hope that he’s able to recover and provide a lifestyle for his family that they’re used to. That’s something that, you know, I have complete empathy for. I can’t imagine being in the same situation right now as far as, you know, being a father.”

frank better work on his boxing!!!! he has improved in that area but not enough. Thats what he has to do if he wants to fight carwin and beat him…………

  • RUhapP2

The main obstacle in beating Carwin is all about his boxing power and his ego. He’s become so confident that he’s not afraid to come out with his all in the 1st round- most of his career he’s got away with it! After Lesnar I think he’ll work on other UFC areas that he’s been able to do without. I just want to see Frank win his next fight- I’ll alway’s be in his corner ! Lesnar comes out charging and Carwin turns it on when least expected-but usually in 1st round! Good luck Frank in your next fight!!!

The only type of fighters that mir isn’t a match for yet are the brawlers. both shane and brock are that type of fighter. make no mistake about it, if they put thier arm in the wrong place, its coming off, but i just hope frank is in the mind set that they are going to brawl him. i will always support frank and route for him, just hope he is sparring with the brawling type ofo fighter so he will be ready. the whole country wants to see him beat brock, not just me!
